I am a board certified Osteopathic family physician. My wife, Jerry, is a registered play therapy supervisor and licensed professional counselor. We are interested in what works and have had experience with a lot of things that don’t.
Together we developed a nasal spray made up of xylitol and saline that assists and stimulates our immune systems efforts to clean the nose. When used regularly a clean nose prevents many of the medical problems that originate there. This includes allergies and asthma as well as problems like ear and sinus infections. More information on this product, as well as the other uses of xylitol, is available at www.nasal-xylitol.com, or in our books: No More Allergies, Asthma, or Sinus Infections, published by Freedom Press in 2010, and The Boids and the Bees: Guiding Adaptation to Improve our Health, Healthcare, Schools, and Society, published by Emergent Publications where a 20% discount is still available.
Jerry’s background in counseling has focused on children and their problems. Many physical and mental illnesses are connected with early life trauma. She likes reality therapy: If what you are doing is not working do something different.
I like to apply this to medicine. There are many things we are doing that don’t work and actually hurt. Many of them are discussed in this site. Before studying medicine I spent 6 years in college and graduate school studying history, with a special interest on the history of science and ideas. I’m sure that this background has influenced the way that I have approached health care and the practice of medicine.
Jerry taught elementary school, moved to special education to get more independence, became a school counselor, a registered play therapist, then a play therapist supervisor. Play is how children talk and registered play therapists are trained (graduate level courses and 550 hours of supervised training) to give language to that play. She is convinced, as am I, that many of the problems in our society and the world come from early childhood trauma, or from faulty practices of well meaning parents and care givers. From these pages you should be able to see our dual interests: in what works, and in getting at the root of problems.
